UNC Falls To Duke In Overtime
January 26, 2015 | Women's Basketball
The Tar Heels (17-4, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) got 15 points and 15 rebounds from Stephanie Mavunga, while Latifah Coleman scored 13 of her 14 points in the first half.
Elizabeth Williams scored a career-high 33 points for Duke (14-6, 5-2 ACC). Redshirt freshman Rebecca Greenwell added 14 points and a season-best 14 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who snapped a five-game road losing streak -- their longest in two decades.
Williams' 33 points were the most ever by a Duke player against UNC. The 6-foot-3 senior finished 14-for-25 from the field and carried the offensive load while also tallying 10 rebounds and four blocks -- including one on Coleman's layup on the final play of regulation.
Trailing by as many as eight points early in the first half, Coleman took it upon herself to get the Tar Heels going with 13 points in a five-minute stretch. Her second three-pointer of the half gave UNC a 32-23 lead.
Danielle Butts (eight points) increased the Carolina lead to 40-28 at the onset of the second half, but Duke, behind Williams' career day, clawed back to tie the game, 54-54, midway through the stanza.
The Blue Devils led by four, 62-58, in the closing minutes of regulation, but N'Dea Bryant's jumper just inside the arc and two free throws from Mavunga with 27 seconds left tied it up at 62-all.
A missed three-pointer from Duke's Ka'lia Johnson (12 points) gave the Tar Heels one last chance, but Coleman's drive to the hoop was blocked.
Williams scored in the post to start overtime, then kicked out to Greenwell for a 3-pointer off an offensive rebound to put Duke in control in the extra session.
North Carolina hosts Boston College on Super Bowl Sunday at 2 p.m. inside Carmichael Arena.
