Carolina Comes Back To Top Boston College
February 1, 2015 | Women's Basketball
North Carolina (18-4, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) held the Eagles scoreless the final seven minutes, 34 seconds when the game was in the balance, tied 60-60. BC missed its final 12 shots and made just two of its last 20 attempts to fall to 9-12, 1-7 in the ACC.
Allisha Gray made up for a poor 2-of-14 effort from the floor by hauling in a career-high 15 rebounds and dishing out six assists against no turnovers in 33 minutes. She did make it the foul line 19 times - just two shy of the school record. Her 15 points gave her a double-double for the seventh time this season.
Boston College led 53-45 with 12:37 left, but the Tar Heels responded with a quick 9-0 spurt to pull ahead 54-53 on a Mavunga bucket in the paint.
With the score tied for the 11th and final time at 60-60, Jessica Washington knocked down a three-pointer from the wing to give Carolina the lead for good.
Kelly Hughes led the Eagles with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Emilee Daley and Nicole Boudreau each added 13 points in the loss.
Mavunga scored Carolina's first six points and N'Dea Bryant (season-high 13 points) followed with the next six points, but it took four straight-points from Gray to give the Tar Heels the lead at 17-13 approaching the mid-point of the first half.
An 8-0 run gave Carolina a 20-13 cushion, but went scoreless the next three minutes allowing the Eagles to claw right back. A bucket from Katie Quandt had the visitors within two, 20-18.
Gray put UNC up 28-25 with an old-fashioned three-point play, but Boston College began to find its footing from distance. Averaging nearly eight triples a game, the Eagles knocked down consecutive three-pointers to retake the lead at 31-28 with three minutes until halftime.
Bryant, who had 10 points alone in the opening half, tied the game at 34-34, before the Eagles scored on the final possession of the stanza for a 36-34 advantage at the break.
Carolina visits No. 23 Syracuse on Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
