NATIONAL RANKINGS
North Carolina is ranked No. 9 by the Associated Press and seventh in the coaches poll this week. NC State is unranked.
UNC-NCSU FOR THE 99TH TIME
Carolina opens conference lay against long-time rival NC State in the 99th meeting between the two schools, the most played series in ACC women's basketball history. NC State owns a 51-47 advantage all-time, but the Tar Heels have won six in a row and is 25-4 against the Wolfpack since 2002.
STRONG RESUME
Carolina is still the only team in the country with four wins over top-25 ranked teams in 2014-15. The Tar Heels picked up non-conference wins over UCLA, Oklahoma State, Stanford and Rutgers.
TOTAL TEAM EFFORT
With the loss of All-ACC forward Xylina McDaniel, Carolina will need its bench to increase its effectiveness by scoring more points and playing additional minutes. In the last two games, the UNC reserves have averaged 37.5 points per game, including 49 last time out against ETSU on Friday afternoon.
BUTTS INSERTED INTO STARTING 5
Senior Danielle Butts has started the last two games in place of the injured McDaniel. She has averaged 5.0 points and 9.5 rebounds. The Winterville, N.C., native had made only eight starts in her first three seasons with the Tar Heels.
J WASH STEPS UP TOO
Sophomore reserve guard Jessica Washington has averaged 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists over the last two games. She tied her career high with 16 points against Albany and played a career-most 30 minutes on Friday against ETSU, reaching double figures once again with 10 points.
MAVUNGA CONNECTS FOR CAREER HIGH 26 VS. ETSU
Meat Loaf sang back in the 1970's about “Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad.” We wonder what he would have said about 13 out of 14, because that's exactly what sophomore forward Stephanie Mavunga shot from the floor against ETSU on Friday.
Her career-high 26 points topped the 24-point effort last year against Illinois. Mavunga pieced together a perfect 10-for-10 showing last season against Coastal Carolina.
NEXT UP
UNC will make its first trip to the Petersen Events Center to take on Pittsburgh this coming Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
