January 6, 2015 | Men's Golf
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Joshua Martin, who will be a freshman at the University of North Carolina next fall, has been selected N.C. Junior Boys' Player of the Year by the Tar Heel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) and the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA).
The N.C. Junior Player of the Year award recognizes one girl and one boy who have had the most successful year in amateur and junior golf events at the local, state, regional and national levels.
Martin, a native of Pinehurst, is a senior at Pinecrest High School. Martin won the 2014 N.C. Amateur Championship becoming the youngest champion of the prestigious event. In December, Martin won the Jones Cup Junior at Sea Island and the Donald Ross Junior at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club. Last August, Martin competed in the men's U.S. Amateur Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. Martin has 14 top-10 finishes in 18 tournaments and has a scoring average of 71.65.
The Player of the Year award was determined by a combination of the player's tournament scoring differential and the total points earned in the TYGA NC rankings events from January 1 through December 31, 2014.
Martin, along with the N.C. Junior Girls' Player of the Year and the 2014 N.C. All-State Girls' and Boys' teams, will be honored at the N.C. Junior Golf Night Awards Banquet on Saturday, February 21, at Pine Needles Resort in Southern Pines.
