Tar Heels Sixth After 2nd Round at Tavistock Collegiate
October 19, 2015 | Men's Golf
WINDERMERE, FLA. --- High winds prevailed in the second round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational Monday as none of the 15 men's golf teams played under par and only three teams bettered their overall score from Sunday's opening round.
The University of North Carolina followed its opening round 287 with a 301 on Monday and stands in sixth place, 19 shots behind the University of California, which has led the team event after each of the first two rounds.
“The wind made the golf course much tougher today and it showed in all of the teams' scores,” says UNC head coach Andrew Sapp. “What set us back today was the amount of big numbers we put on the scorecards. We have to eliminate the doubles and others tomorrow and try to go out and win the third round. We are not that far out of the top two or three teams chasing California and, if we play like we are capable, we can move up the leaderboard.”
A pair of Tar Heels are in the top 15 in the individual competition with sophomore William Register tied for 13th and junior Henry Do tied for 15th after both shot 75 in the second-round.
Sophomore Ben Griffin moved up to a tie for 24th after a team-best 73 on Monday. Junior Carter Jenkins is tied for 36th and freshman Joshua Martin is tied for 49th.
The University of Florida shot 289 for the best team round of the second round. The Gators were a stroke better than California. UNC had the ninth-best team score of the day.
Arizona State's Max Rottluff and California's Collin Morikawa are tied atop the individual standings at 7-under-par 137. They are four shots clear of ASU's Jon Rahm.
The three-round event will conclude with 18 holes on at Isleworth Country Club.
