UNC Finishes -28, 2nd At Bridgestone Collegiate
October 26, 2015 | Men's Golf
GREENSBORO – University of North Carolina junior Henry Do finished second with a career-best 11-under-par and freshman Joshua Martin finished a season-best fourth to lead the Tar Heels to a second-place finish at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate on the East Course at Grandover Resort.
The Tar Heels started Monday's third and final round four shots behind Purdue and played two shots better today than the Boilermakers but fell just shy of the top spot. Carolina shot 289 today and 836 overall.
“It is a bit painful to lose by two strokes, but hats off to Purdue,” says UNC head coach Andrew Sapp. “My former Tar Heel teammate, Rob Bradley, is coaching a strong Boilermaker team, and they held us off today. We had some fine individual play and the low team round of the day, but it wasn't quite enough. I am proud of how our guys fought in the tough conditions. We're looking forward to the spring season.”
Carolina's 54-hole score of 836 is the sixth-best in school history and the -28 is the fifth-best result against par in school history.
Do shot a career-low 65 in the first round yesterday and was two shots behind Austin Eoff of Purdue entering the third round. Eoff held on for the win as both players shot even-par 72s today despite cold and windy conditions.
Do's 205 total and 11-under-par finish are both personal collegiate bests. His 205 ties the eighth-best 54-hole stroke total in Carolina history.
Martin shot a 71 today to finish fourth. He finished 70-66-71–207 and was one of just three players in the field to shoot under par in all three rounds. The fourth-place finish is his best and his second top-10 performance in four events this fall.
Junior Carter Jenkins tied for eighth place at -3, 213. Sophomore William Register finished tied for 16th (E, 216) and sophomore Ben Griffin tied for 59th (+11, 227). Freshman Preyer Fountain played as an individual and tied for 56th (+10, 226).
