PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - North Carolina freshman Jessie Aney came up short in her bid for the Main Draw at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championship on Wednesday.
One day removed from winning two matches in the qualifying singles draw over nationally-ranked competition, Aney lost 6-0, 6-1, to 29th-ranked Ellen Perez of Georgia.
Aney defeated No. 73 Wendy Zhang, a sophomore from the University of Miami, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday morning.
The next opponent was No. 9 seed Courtney Colton of Vanderbilt, the 34th-ranked singles player in the country. Again, Aney dropped the opening set 4-6, before storming back with 6-1 and 6-0 victories in the second and third sets, respectively.
Senior Whitney Kay faced top-seeded and 23rd-ranked Jasmine Lee of Ole Miss on Tuesday and fell 6-4, 6-3, in her opening round match.
Kay, ranked No. 62 nationally, then competed in the qualifying singles back draw, and was upended by Notre Dame's 93rd-ranked Quinn Gleason - 7-6 (1), 6-1.
In doubles, Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle, seeded No. 2 in the qualifying draw, won 8-2 over Maryland's duo of Kristina Hovsepyan and Ekaterina Tour in the first round on Tuesday.
They faced Purdue's Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Krisztina Kapitany on Wednesday, and came up short in an 8-3 loss.
The main draw brackets for both singles and doubles were released on Wednesday. Hayley Carter earned the No. 8 seed and will take on Ronit Yurovsky of Michigan on Thursday. Carter won in straight sets over Yurovsky three weeks ago in the first round of the Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif.
In doubles, Carter and Kay are slated for a first-round match with Southern Cal's Gabby Smith and Jessica Failla on Thursday as well.
