Carolina Falls To Gardner-Webb
November 13, 2015 | Women's Basketball
Jamie Cherry appeared to have rescued North Carolina (0-1) with another late three-pointer to give her team a 65-64 lead with just seven ticks left in regulation. However, Brown drove the lane and scored the winning bucket for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Cherry had a career-high 25 points for the Tar Heels. Hillary Summer also notched her career high with 13 points, while freshmen guards Destinee Walker and Stephanie Watts added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Trailing 25-24 out of intermission, Watts knocked down a three-pointer and Summers converted a three-point play to put Carolina up 30-25, forcing the visitors to call an early second-half timeout.
UNC continued its momentum the remainder of the third period, taking a 49-36 lead on a put-back layup from N'Dea Bryant. Carolina would outscore Gardner-Webb 27-10 in the third, with Cherry scoring 10 points alone in the quarter.
The rolls ended up reversing in the fourth quarter as GWU outscored the Tar Heels 30-14. After trailing by 13 early in the final period, Gardner-Webb tied the game at 58-58 with under four minutes to play, setting up five lead changes down the stretch.
Brown led Gardner-Webb (1-0) with 17 points, while Alexus Hill added 14.
A fast-break scoop-and-score from Walker put Carolina up 8-4 to get the Tar Heels going in the first official college game for the Orlando, Fla., native. Summers connected on consecutive field goals late in the first quarter to give the Heels a 12-10 advantage after 10 minutes.
Gardner-Webb took its first lead of the game, 23-21, on a three-pointer from Olivia Parker (11 points, 11 rebounds) at the 3:32 mark of the second quarter.
The lead grew to 25-21, before Cherry picked off a Runnin' Bulldogs pass and went coast-to-coast for the hoop and was fouled on the way up. The sophomore converted the three-point play to get Carolina within 25-24 at the half.
UNC hosts Oregon on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
