Cherry Helps Heels Top Yale

CHAPEL HILL - Jamie Cherry scored a game high 24 points to pace North Carolina to a 70-63 victory over Yale in the third and final game of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge from Carmichael Arena.
Cherry went 7-of-12 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line to give North Carolina (4-2) its fourth win in a row. N'Dea Bryant added 12 points and 13 rebounds for her first career double-double. Xylina McDaniel scored a season-high 11 points off the bench, while Destinee Walker chipped in 10 points.
Nyasha Serju led Yale with 13 points, while Lena Munzer had 10 points for the Bulldogs.
Leading 37-35 in the third quarter, Carolina pieced together a 12-0 spurt that put the Heels up 14, 49-35 late in the quarter. However, Yale answered back with the final seven points of the quarter to make the score 49-42 Tar Heels with 10 minutes left in a busy weekend of basketball.
Cherry put her club back up double digits in the fourth. She scored 11 of her points in the final stanza to lead her team to victory.
The Tar Heels continued to shine at the free throw line, converting 76.9 percent (20-of-26) of their attempts. Cherry was 8-of-9 from the line, and McDaniel made all five of her attempts.
Carolina hosts Pacific on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
