Summers Leads Carolina Over Wingate
November 5, 2015 | Women's Basketball
Destinee Walker's three-pointer with less than three minutes left in regulation gave Carolina some breathing room against a feisty Bulldog team coached by former Tar Heel assistant Ann Hancock.
Walker would make a steal and go in for two more points on the ensuing play to put UNC up 54-48 with 2:17 left. The Tar Heels finished the game on an 11-0 run.
Hillary Summers scored 15 points to lead Carolina, while Walker added 13 points in her collegiate debut. Jamie Cherry tossed in 10 points.
Carolina was active on defense all night long, coming up with 19 steals that led to 24 points.
Wingate was led by Shelby Tricoli with 11 points. The Bulldogs were picked second in the Division II South Atlantic Conference.
Summers scored 11 points in a dominating third-quarter performance by the Tar Heel red-shirt junior forward. She was 4-of-5 from the floor and made three of four foul shots to give Carolina the lead.
A runner in the paint by Cherry in the waining seconds of the third quarter put Carolina up 41-38 with 10 minutes left in the game.
It took Walker a few minutes to get going in her first collegiate test, but once she made her first shot in the second quarter it led to eight-straight points that brought Carolina back into the game.
Moments later, a bucket from Xylina McDaniel and another from Cherry saw UNC close the second quarter on a 12-3 run that tied the game 24-24 at intermission.
Carolina hosts Mount Olive on Monday at 6 p.m. in the final exhibition before the regular season begins against Gardner-Webb on Friday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m.
