Senior Xylina McDaniel led North Carolina (5-4) with a season-high 22 points and nine rebounds, while classmate N'Dea Bryant added 16 points and nine boards. Freshmen guards Destinee Walker and Stephanie Watts had 14 and 11 points, respectively.
For Northwestern (7-0), Lyon was 10-of-18 from the field, including making seven of her 10 three-point attempts. Nia Coffey had a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Christen Inman had 16 points and Ashley Deary had 12 points and nine assists.
Trailing by 23 points heading into the fourth quarter, the Tar Heels showed some fight by trimming its deficit down to 79-70 on a jumper from Bryant with just over two minutes left.
But the final dagger was Lyon's seventh three-ball of the night that put the Wildcats back up double figures.
North Carolina's three previous losses this season were by a combined six points. Tonight, Northwestern made eight of its first 10 shots from the floor to lead 19-2 just four minutes, 50 seconds into the game. Lyon and Inman each drained three-pointers as the unbeaten Wildcats scored the first 11 points of the contest.
Northwestern led 28-11 after 10 minutes, and would extend its advantage to as many as 28, 43-15, midway through the second stanza. Carolina trailed 52-29 at the half.
Walker fueled Carolina to a 7-0 run out of halftime to get within 52-36 of the visiting Wildcats. The Tar Heels later trimmed their deficit to 14 points, but Lyon's three-point play swung the lead back up 19, 63-44 late in the third quarter.
North Carolina hosts Appalachian State on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.
