Northwestern Dual Meets
UNC Women 6-0 On Sunday As Teams Fence At Northwestern

The Northwestern Duals, held over the weekend in Evanston, Ill., provided the UNC men's and women's fencing teams with plenty of experience and, in the end, an extra night on the road. The Tar Heels fenced throughout the day on Saturday and again on Sunday, as snow came down outside Henry Crown Sports Pavilion. By the time they boarded the bus for the trip back to Chapel Hill, Chicago was under a blizzard warning and the roads were unsafe, so the team stayed another night in the area with plans to bus back on Monday morning.
The UNC women went 9-3 in the competition, including a 6-0 mark on Sunday. The men went 7-4 overall, including a 5-3 mark on Sunday.
“They came together well,” said Josh Webb, the team's Primary Assistant Coach. “We saw a lot of progress on the things we've been working on and saw some bright spots even in the losses. We're moving toward peaking at the right time in the season.”
Webb and assistant coach Joe Alter coached the Tar Heels at Northwestern in the absence of head coach Ron Miller, who was sidelined by the flu and was unable to make the trip to Northwestern with the team.
But Miller is on the mend and will be back with the team as soon as the team is back in Chapel Hill. Next up for the Tar Heels is the rare weekend without a long bus trip – UNC will travel to Durham to fence at the Duke Dual Meets. Although that event is often a Saturday-Sunday schedule, this year's will be a one-day meet, with both the men and women fencing on Saturday at Duke's Card Gym.
