February 22, 2015 | Women's Lacrosse
COLLEGE PARK, MD. – Three Maryland players tallied hat tricks as the top-ranked Terrapins outlasted No. 2 North Carolina, 13-11, in women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on the Maryland campus. Tar Heel Alex Moore scored three goals in the final 15:05 and Sammy Jo Tracy also scored three times for UNC, but the Terps held on for the victory.
The game was originally slated to be played on Saturday but was rescheduled due to snow in College Park yesterday. It was the first game between the old Atlantic Coast Conference rivals since Maryland left the ACC prior to the 2014-15 academic year to join the Big Ten.
The Terrapins out-shot Carolina, 33-16, and won 18 draw controls to UNC's eight on the day. Carolina made 12 saves to Maryland's three, keeping the Tar Heels in the game despite the shot differential.
In addition to the scoring output of Tracy and Moore, Carolina got two goals from Brittney Coppa, a goal and three assists from Maggie Bill and single goals from Aly Messinger and Ela Hazar. Marie McCool and Courtney Waite both had assists for Carolina. Maryland got three goals each from Megan Whittle, Taylor Cummings and Kelly McPartland. Zoe Stukenberg had two goals and an assist, Erin Collins and Brooke Griffin both scored single goals and Kristen Lamon had an assist.
Maryland struck first with a goal in the fourth minute of play before Coppa scored back-to-back goals to give the Tar Heels a 2-1 advantage at the 23:35 mark of the first half. Maryland then went on a 4-0 run with two of those goals coming from Whittle to make it 5-2 Terrapins. Tracy responded with consecutive UNC goals to make it 5-4 before Maryland scored the last two of the half for a 7-4 lead at the break.
Messinger and Tracy scored the first two goals of the second half making it 7-6 Maryland, but the Terps scored four of the next five goals to build an 11-7 advantage with 23:05 to play. Moore's three goals down the stretch, plus a late score from Hazar, weren't enough for UNC.
Caylee Waters started in goal for Carolina and played the first 32:01. She made seven saves and allowed seven goals, taking the loss to fall to 2-1 this season. Megan Ward came into the cage and played the final 27:59, making five saves and allowing six Terp goals. Alex Fitzpatrick went the distance in goal for Maryland, making three saves.
Carolina will return to action next Saturday at home when it hosts Northwestern at Fetzer Field at noon.
