Four Tar Heels On Tewaaraton Watch List
February 27, 2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Coppa is a fifth-year senior from Hampstead, Md., who has returned to the field this season after missing last year with a knee injury. She is an Inside Lacrosse preseason first-team All-America for the second year in a row and a preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference pick this spring. Coppa has 10 goals and one assist in the first four games this season.
Messinger was a third-team preseason All-America prior to the season after earning third-team All-America honors as a sophomore in 2014. A junior attacker from Mendham, N.J., tallied 41 points and 14 assists last year and five goals and four assists through four games this season.
Waite, a senior defender from Bernardsville, N.J., is a member of the U.S. National Team. She also was a second-team preseason All-America by Inside Lacrosse this spring. Waite has developed nicely from a freshman who played in seven games in 2012 to a part-time starter for the 2013 NCAA championship team, to a U.S. National Team member after starting eight of 20 games in 2014.
Waters, also a member of the U.S. National Team, is a preseason second-team All-America and All-ACC pick. She was the ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 11 after making 11 saves in a road win over No. 3 Florida. This season, she's started all four Tar Heel games and posted a save percentage of .479.
Four of the five 2014 women's finalists return to the 2015 watch list, including Megan Douty (Maryland), Shannon Gilroy (Florida), Kayla Treanor (Syracuse) and 2014 winner Taylor Cummings (Maryland).
“The national reach of quality players is evident in this list, with players from all regions of the country, along with a strong group of five former winners and finalists,” said Jeff Harvey, chairman of The Tewaaraton Foundation. “As the season unfolds, we are excited for another deserving group of Tewaaraton Award candidates to emerge and we look forward to welcoming them to Washington, DC in May.”
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.

Players not named to the initial list have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch lists additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 19 and April 9. On April 23, the field will be narrowed to 25 nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions. Five finalists will be announced on May 7 and invited to the ceremony. The Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C., on May 28, 2015, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
