Tar Heels Sit Tied For Third At Lamkin San Diego Classic

SAN DIEGO, CA. – The Tar Heels finished the first day of the Lamkin San Diego Classic in third place after a 2-under-par first round and a 1-over second round to sit at 1-under 575. Freshman Ben Griffin and sophomore Carter Jenkins sit tied for fourth at 3-under 141 heading into the final round Tuesday.
Griffin, from Chapel Hill, N.C., shot a 2-under 70 in the first round with five birdies and three bogeys, and followed it up with a 1-under 71. The freshman only made seven pars in the round, with six birdies and five bogeys spread throughout the afternoon. Jenkins also had a strong first round, with five birdies, one bogey, and one double-bogey, to shoot a 2-under 70. The afternoon saw much of the same for the sophomore transfer from Raleigh, N.C., with five birdies, two bogeys, and one double-bogey for a 1-under 71.
William Register also played well in his first college trip to San Diego. The freshman from Burlington, N.C. made three birdies, one bogey, and a double-bogey in the first round to shoot an even-par 72. In the second round, he made three birdies and five bogeys to card a 2-over 74 in the second round to finish the day at 2-over 146 in a tie for 29th.
Henry Do finished Monday tied for 33rd at 3-over 147 with a 2-over 74 in the first round with two birdies and four bogeys. The Canton, Mich. sophomore started the afternoon on the par-5 8th with a par before making three birdies and four bogeys to card a 1-over 73.
Brandon Dalinka rounded out the team with a 7-over 151 after a 3-over 75 first round and a 4-over 76 second. Overall, the senior from Newtown, Pa. fired four birdies, nine bogeys, and one double-bogey.
Senior Robert Register traveled as an individual this week for the Tar Heels and finished tied for 80th at 17-over 161 after the first day. Register, out of Burlington, N.C., struggled in the first round with six bogeys and three double-bogeys for a 12-over 84 but rebounded with a 5-over 77 in the second round. He made his first birdie of the day on the par-4 9th hole, along with four bogeys and one double-bogey.
New Mexico blew the field away Monday with a 10-under 278 first round start, followed by a 4-under 284 second round to sit at 14-under 562. The Lobos made 16 birdies in the first round and one eagle, followed by 13 birdies and three eagles in the second round. Washington sits 12 shots back at 2-under 574, followed by North Carolina and San Diego tied at 1-under 575 in third. San Diego State shot an even-par 576 on Monday for fifth place, followed by Pepperdine at 8-over 584 in sixth. Louisiana Tech, BYU, Arizona, and Oregon State round out the top 10 at 18-over 594, a tie for 21-over 597, and 22-over 598, respectively.
Gavin Green holds a six-shot lead over the 86-man field with a 10-under 134. The New Mexico senior shot two 5-under 67 rounds on the day. Green made five birdies in the first round, followed by four birdies, an eagle, and a bogey in the second round. Victor Lange of Louisiana Tech and Corey Pereira of Washington tied for second at 4-under 140. George Cunningham of Arizona, Cheng-Tsung Pan of Washington, Ben Griffin of North Carolina, Mathias Dahl of San Diego, Carter Jenkins of North Carolina, and Gustavo Morantes of New Mexico rounded out the top 10 with a tie for fourth at 3-under 141.
