March 11, 2015 | Men's Golf
CHULA VISTA, CALIF. - The North Carolina men's golf team fired a 3-under-par 285 in the final round of the Lamkin San Diego Classic to finish as the runner up, six strokes behind champion Washington. Carolina posted a 4-under 860 total and was led in the final round by sophomore Carter Jenkins who fired a 3-under 69.
“We finished strong today which was good because it helped us move up the leader board late in the round,” says Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. “Carter birding three of his last four was huge. Anytime you have four guys finish in the top 20 it is going to take something special from another team for them to beat you. Washington played great today and had two players tie for first. Hats off to them.”
Jenkins, a native of Raleigh, N.C. fired five birdies and two bogeys en route to his 3-under 69. He tied for fourth place at 6-under 210 by finishing strong, as Sapp said, with three birdies on his last four holes (holes #15, #16, #17). Freshmen William Register and Ben Griffin both tied for 10th place at even par 216. Register, from Burlington, N.C., fired a 2-under 70 on Tuesday with three birdies and just one bogey, including a birdie on hole #17. Griffin, from Chapel Hill, N.C., carded a 3-over 75 in the final round and also posted an even par 216 total.
Henry Do also finished in the top 20 by tying for 18th place at 2-ocer 218. The sophomore from Canton, Mich., fired a 1-under 71 in the final round with four birdies and three bogeys on the day. Senior Brandon Dalinka, from Newtown, Pa., shot an 81 for a 232 total and finished in 65th place. Another senior, Robert Register, competed as an individual and fired a 2-over 74 on Tuesday. The native of Burlington (and William's brother) finished with a 235 total to tie for 72nd place.
“I am very proud of our team's effort this week,” continues Sapp. “To come all the way out to the west coast and play mainly west coast teams and beat all but one shows that we can take our good play on the road. This is a great group of guys and we are looking forward to the next tournament.”
Sapp noted the Tar Heels had a lot of support while playing in California. “A big thank you to Billy Armfield who hosted us at Eagle Point last weekend which served as great preparation and to Kent Smith who hosted us out at the Farms in Rancho Santa Fe on Saturday and that also helped us get acclimated to California golf. We have spectacular support from our Carolina Family.”
Washington came from behind to finish atop the 14-team field at 10-under-par 854 after firing an 8-under 280 in the final round. Carolina was the runner-up after shooingt a 3-under 285 on Tuesday for a 4-under 860 total. New Mexico, which held a 12-stroke lead going into the final round shot a 301 to finish in third place at 1-under 863, three strokes behind the Tar Heels. Co-host San Diego finished fourth at even par 864 while Pepperdine finished fifth at 4-over 868 and co-host San Diego State placed sixth at 8-over 872.
Two Washington players, Cheng-Tsung Pan and Corey Pereira, were crowned individual co-champions as both finished with an 8-under-par 208 total.
