Tar Heel Golfers Third At Linger Longer Invitational

GREENSBORO, GA. – The North Carolina men's golf team sits in third place at 17-under-par 559 going into the final round of the Linger Longer Invitational played at the prestigious Reynolds Plantation's Great Waters Course. The Tar Heels fired an 11-under 273 in the first round followed by a 6-under 282 in the second. Carolina was led by freshman Ben Griffin and sophomore Carter Jenkins in the first two rounds.
Griffin fired a 6-under 66 in the second round to jump into a tie for second place at 8-under 136. The Chapel Hill native fired eight birdies and just two bogeys in the afternoon round after posting a 2-under 70 in the morning round on four birdies and two bogeys. Jenkins, from Raleigh, N.C., also shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday – his came in the first round on eight birdies and two bogeys. He is tied for eighth place at 6-under 138 after an even par 72 in the second round.
Henry Do, a sophomore from Canton, Mich., is tied for 21st place at 2-under 142. He fired a 4-under 68 in the first round with five birdies and one bogey followed by a 2-over 74 in the second round. Senior Brandon Dalinka, from Newtown, Pa., and freshman William Register, from Burlington, N.C., are both tied for 55th place at 2-over 146. Dalinka fired a 1-under 71 in the second round after shooting a 75 in the first round while Register shot a pair of 73s. Senior Bailey Patrick, from Charlotte, N.C., is playing as an individual and is in 82nd place with a 159 total after rounds of 81-78.
Kennesaw State and Texas both fired a 15-under-par 273 to grab the first-round lead over the 15-team field. Kennesaw State jumped out in front with an 8-under 280 in the second for a 23-under 553 total while Texas shot a 4-under 484 in the second round and sits at 19-under 557. Carolina is in third place at 17-under 559 after rounds of 277-282. Oklahoma and Georgia are tied for fourth place at 16-under 560. Mercer is in sixth place at 7-under 569, Alabama is seventh at 6-under 570 and Clemson and Liberty are tied for eighth place at 2-under 274.
Lee McCoy of Georgia grabbed the individual lead with a 9-under-par 135 after two rounds. McCoy fired a 7-under 65 in the first round followed by a 2-under 70 in the second round. Carolina's Griffin is one of three players tied for second place at 8-under 136 – the other two are Beau Hossler of Texas and Austin Vick of Kennesaw State. Another three players are tied for fifth place at 7-under 137 – Oklahoma's Michael Gellerman, Mercer's Trey Rule and Kennesaw State's Teremoana Beaucousin. There is a four-way tie for eighth place at 6-under 138 – Carolina's Jenkins, Georgia's Nicholas Reach, Kennesaw State's Kelby Burton and Oklahoma's Rylee Reinertson.
The final round of the Linger Longer Invitational will be played Sunday at the Great Waters Golf Course at Reynolds Plantation which features a par 72, 7,073-yard layout. There will be a shotgun start beginning at 8:30. Live scoring will be available on GoHeels.com and Golfstat.com.
