Tar Heels Fall To No. 3 BC In Overtime
March 22, 2015 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL – Senior midfielder Mikaela Rix scored the gamewinning goal midway through the first overtime period to give No. 3 Boston College a 10-9 women's lacrosse win over No. 2 North Carolina Saturday evening at Fetzer Field. With the victory, BC stayed perfect at 9-0 overall, 4-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. UNC fell to 8-2 (1-1 ACC).
The Tar Heels had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but BC goalkeeper Zoe Ochoa made a diving save, her first of overtime and ninth of the game, to preserve the Eagles' win.
“It's a tough loss for our girls,” said UNC coach Jenny Levy. “I thought we did a nice job in overtime. Michaela Rix is one of their seniors and a tremendous player. She put the gamewinning goal in on a great individual effort. We had a chance to tie it up at the end and we didn't finish – credit their goalie for making a great save.”
The first half was low-scoring, with Boston College leading 4-2 at the half. Tess Chandler gave the Eagles the lead on a free-position goal just over a minute into the game. Senior Kelly Devlin got UNC on the board at the 25:03 mark and sophomore Maggie Bill had the Tar Heels' other first-half goal.
As the pace picked up in the second half, UNC got into a flow and took the lead. After Rix opened the half with a goal that put BC up 5-2, the Tar Heels got back-to-back scores from junior Sammy Jo Tracy and sophomore Molly Hendrick. After another goal by Chandler, UNC went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-6 lead. Hendrick had two goals in that span and a team-high four on the day.
“I thought we did a great job at the beginning of the second half and made some great plays, but we've got to keep putting the ball in the back of the next and not allow good teams to get back in,” Levy said. “Credit Boston College – they're a good team and I'm sure we'll see them again at some point this season.”
Henrick's fourth goal put UNC up 9-7 with 18:41 to play. Sarah Mannelly scored the game-tying goal with 7:55 remaining and neither team could muster another before heading into overtime, UNC's second extra-period game in a row. (Last Sunday, the Tar Heels won 15-14 at Towson in double overtime.)
After Hendrick's four goals, Bill had two and Tracy, Devlin and Sam McGee one each. McGee also had two assists while Aly Messinger had one.
Sophomore Caylee Waters played all 66 minutes in goal for UNC, making seven saves.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a string of three road games, beginning on Wednesday at Virginia Tech. UNC's only remaining home game is April 11 vs. Syracuse.
