Tar Heels Fall 6-4 In Game Three Against Louisville
March 22, 2015 | Softball
Louisville, KY – North Carolina fell victim to a Louisville comeback in game three of this weekend's ACC softball series.
After Aquilla Mateen singled up the middle for the first hit of the game, Kristen Brown went downtown in the top of the first with a two-run blast to give UNC an early lead.
Louisville would pick up a run of it's own in the bottom of the first after a Maryssa Becker double went just past the outstretched glove of a diving Dani Garcielita in left field, scoring Kelsi Jones from second base.
Carolina added another run in the second after Shelby McCombs threw a wild pitch with two outs and runners on the corners, allowing Lauren Walker to scurry home and make it a 3-1 Tar Heel lead.
An Ashley Nikolao RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the third brought Louisville to within one.
The Cardinals took the lead in the fourth after Kelsi Jones hit a scorcher to center field with the bases loaded, bringing in two runs. Later in the inning Becker would hit a single that scored two more and after four innings the scoreboard read Louisville 6, North Carolina 3.
The Tar Heels would answer back in the fifth as Brown belted a solo shot over the wall in left field for her second home run of the day, fifth of the week, and 13th of the season.
Kaylee Carlson started the game in the circle for the Tar Heels, pitching four innings, allowing six Louisville runs before being replaced by Sydney Matzko. Matzko would throw two hitless innings to keep the Cardinals at bay.
Carolina would have a chance to tie the game in the sixth when Jenna Kelly singled and Amber Parrish walked to start the inning. After a wild strike three to Lauren Walker let the two advance to second and third, pinch hitters Kati Causey and Jill Ferraro would strike out swinging and ground out to the pitcher to end the UNC rally.
The Tar Heels drop to 21-7 on the year and 6-2 in the ACC. They will be back in action at home this Wednesday when they take on James Madison in a doubleheader at 3 and 5 p.m.
