UNC Golfers Tie For Third At Linger Longer Invitational

GREENSBORO, GA. – The North Carolina men's golf team finished in a tie for third place at the Linger Longer Invitational played at the prestigious Reynolds Plantation's Great Waters Course. The Tar Heels fired an even par 288 in the final round to finish with a 17-under-par 847 three-round total. Carolina was led on Sunday by freshman Ben Griffin who finished third in the individual race.
“It was a wet and sloppy day. but I am glad we got to go out and compete in a tightly contested match,” says Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. “One of the real differences today was how we played 18 versus some of the competition. We play the par five even par where Kennesaw State and Texas played it five-under-par.
“It was a great tournament for Ben and a solid finish for Carter and Henry,” Sapp continues. “We need to continue to grow and improve in the next weeks and months in order to reach our goals. We are close and hopefully we will peak at the right time.”
Griffin fired at 2-under-par 70 en route to his 10-under 206 total. The Chapel Hill native fired five birdies and just three bogeys on Sunday. Sophomore Carter Jenkins, from Raleigh, N.C., carded a 2-over 74 on four birdies, four bogeys and one double bogey. His 4-under 212 total put him in a tie for 12th place. Henry Do, a sophomore from Canton, Mich., fired a 1-under 71 in the final round. He placed 16th with a 3-under 213 total after three birdies and two bogeys on the day.
Senior Brandon Dalinka, from Newtown, Pa., had a strong outing firing a 1-over 73 on Sunday. He finished with a 3-over 219 total to tie for 47th place after posting four birdies and five bogeys. William Register, a freshman from Burlington, N.C., struggled in the final round shooting an 85 and finishing with a 231 total to finish 77th. Bailey Patrick, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., is competing as an individual and carded a 77 for a 236 total in a tie for 80th place.
Third-ranked Texas fired fired a 5-under-par 283 in the final round to capture the team title with a 24-under 840 total. Georgia was the runner-up at 19-under 845 while Carolina and co-host Kennesaw State tied for third place at 17-under 847. Oklahoma finished in fifth place at 13-under 857, co-host Mercer sixth at 5-under 859, Alabama seventh at 4-under 860, Liberty eighth at 1-over 865 and Clemson ninth at 5-over 869.
Lee McCoy of Georgia is the individual medalist after firing a 5-under 67 in the final round to finish at 14-under 202. Beau Hossler of Texas was the runner-up, finishing two strokes back at 12-under 204 after shooting a 4-under 68. Carolina's Griffin finished alone in third place at 10-under 206 after firing a 2-under 70 on Sunday. Mercer's Trey Rule and Emmanuel Kountakis tied for fourth place at 8-under 208 Teremoana Beaucousin of Kennesaw State finished sixth at 7-under 209 and Tom Lovelady of Alabama placed seventh at 6-under 210. Four players tied for eighth place at 5-under 211 – Oklahoma's Michael Gellerman, Georgia's Sepp Straka and Texas' Gavin Hall and Kramer Hickok.
The 54-hole event was played Sunday at the Great Waters Golf Course at Reynolds Plantation which features a par 72, 7,073-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action April 10-11 at the Liberty Spring Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
