Hendrick's Three Goals Lead UNC Past UVa, 10-7

CHAPEL HILL – Second-ranked North Carolina got three goals from Molly Hendrick and two scores apiece from Maggie Bill and Sammy Jo Tracy in a 10-7 win over No. 8 Virginia on Saturday at Fetzer Field.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first 3:53 of action, but Hendrick scored twice and Bill scored once in a 3-0 run that gave the Tar Heels a 4-1 lead it would never relinquish. The Cavaliers got as close as within two goals twice later in the opening half and UNC led, 6-4, at the break.
Bill and Tracy scored back-to-back goals in the first two minutes coming out of the lockerroom to give the Tar Heels an 8-4 lead 28:13 left to go. The Cavs could get no closer than three goals the rest of the way.
Aly Messinger had a goal and an assist for the Tar Heels, and Brittney Coppa and Kelly Devlin both scored single goals. Virginia got three goals from Kasey Behr, two from Kelly Boyd and a goal and an assist from both Liza Blue and Casey Bocklet.
Caylee Waters started in goal for the Tar Heels and improved to 5-1 this season, making four saves in the first half. Megan Ward played the second half in UNC's normal goalie rotation and made six saves in 30:00 of action.
Carolina controlled 12 of the game's 19 draws but the Cavaliers held advantages of 25-22 in shots and 28-20 in ground balls. The Tar Heels won six of eight draws in the second half to hold its lead throughout.
Carolina will return to action next weekend with a pair of games in the Baltimore area. The Tar Heels will play Albany on Friday in Lutherville, Md., at the St. Paul's School for Girls. On Sunday, UNC will play at Towson.
