April 11, 2015 | Men's Golf
AMHERST, VA. – The Tar Heels took an early lead Friday morning in the wet conditions but finished in second place at 9-under-par 567. Freshman William Register also sits in a tie for the lead at 7-under 137.
"It was great to see William [Register] get his game back on track today," Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "Tomorrow, it is time for all of us to gel at the same time and play a fantastic final round."
Register held the top spot after the first round with a 5-under 67, complete with six birdies and only one bogey. The second round, the freshman from Burlington carded an eagle on the par-4 12th, four birdies, two bogeys, and a double to finish at 2-under 70 in the second round.
Sophomore Henry Do continued his strong play with a 2-under 70 in the first round and an even-par 72 in the second to finish in a tie for eighth at 2-under 142. Carter Jenkins also finished inside the top 20 in a tie for 16th at even-par 144 after two even-par 72 rounds. The sophomore from Raleigh made four birdies and four bogeys in the second round. Ben Griffin finished the day in a tie for 22nd at 1-over 145. The freshman from Chapel Hill made nine birdies, six bogeys, and two double-bogeys on the day in his 1-over 73 and even-par 72 rounds.
Senior Brandon Dalinka rounded out the squad with a 3-over 147 after a couple of up-and-down rounds. A native of Newtown, Pa., Dalinka started the morning 3-over before carding his first birdie, followed by an eagle and a triple-bogey back-to-back. He went on to card another birdie and two more bogeys on route to a 4-over 76. In the second round, Dalinka shot four birdies with a double-bogey on the front nine and a birdie and two bogeys on the back to turn in a 1-under 71. He finished tied for 34th.
"We stumbled on the back nine today, losing about a 9-shot lead to Oklahoma," Sapp said. "So we need to come out making birdies right away to close the gap early."
Oklahoma spent much of the second round in second place behind the Tar Heels, at one point seven shots back, before surging to take the 5-shot lead at 14-under 562. North Carolina sits in second at 9-under 567, followed by Lipscomb at 2-under 574. Liberty finished as the only other team under par at 1-under 575. Northern Illinois, Radford, Campbell, Columbia, Loyola, and Wright State round out the top 10 at 1-over 577, 6-over 582, 9-over 585, 10-over 586, 15-over 591, and 17-over 593, respectively.
Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb and William Register of North Carolina hold the lead at 7-under 137, followed by Mathieu Fenasse of Liberty, Charlie Saxon of Oklahoma, Arjuna Anday of Columbia, and Mikko Lehtovuori of Campbell at 4-under 140 tied for third. Matt Oshrine of Loyola sits in seventh at 3-under 141. There is a six-way tie for eighth at 2-under 142, which includes Michael Gellerman of Oklahoma, Christopher Crawford of Drexel, Grant Hirschman of Oklahoma, Jordan Wetsch of Northern Illinois, Henry Do of North Carolina, and Stoney Crouch of Lipscomb.
