Tar Heels Seventh At ACC Championships
April 24, 2015 | Men's Golf
NEW LONDON, N.C. – The Tar Heel men's golf team started the ACC Championships with a seventh place 5-over-par 293 after the first round. Sophomore Henry Do led the Tar Heels with a 2-under 70 in a tie for ninth.
“Henry got off to a good start to the tournament shooting 70, but a team score of 5 over is not what we wanted at all,” said Head Coach Andrew Sapp.
Do, a native of Canton, Mich., carded six birdies and four bogeys in the first round. This was Do's first round under par in his second ACC Championships. Previously, his low score at the tournament was a 1-over 73 in the first round in 2014.
Carter Jenkins also finished inside the top 30 in the opening round with a 1-over 73 tied for 23rd. The sophomore from Raleigh, playing in his first ACC Championships, made one birdie and two bogeys on the opening nine before closing with a bogey and a birdie on No. 17 and 18. Ben Griffin finished close behind at 2-over 74 in a tie for 30th. The freshman out of Chapel Hill, who has already collected two tournament titles this season, opened with a birdie on the par-5 first before collecting two more birdies, three bogeys, and a double-bogey.
Freshman William Register from Burlington struggled on the opening nine, carding eight pars and one double-bogey, before picking up his first birdie on the par-3 14th. He followed that with three closing bogeys to end at 4-over 76 in a tie for 41st. Senior Brandon Dalinka from Newtown, Pa.,, the low Tar Heel in last year's event, also found difficulty on the course Friday, making only one birdie, along with five bogeys and one double-bogey en route to a 6-over 78 in a tie for 49th.
“The good news is that I don't think we could have shot worse today and we only shot 5-over,” Sapp said. “Now we need to make a move in round two and get back into the chase.”
Clemson, ranked 37th by Golfstat, surged to an early lead at the tournament, firing a 7-under 281. All but one Tiger carded an under-par round Friday. First-ranked Florida State sits in a close second at 6-under 282, followed by Virginia in third at 5-under 283. Reigning champ Georgia Tech is tied for fourth with Virginia Tech at 4-under 284, followed by Louisville in sixth at 2-over 290. North Carolina is in seventh at 5-over 293, Duke is in eighth at 9-over 297, and Wake Forest is in ninth at 11-over 299. Notre Dame, NC State, and Boston College tied for 10th at 15-over 303.
Anders Albertson of Georgia Tech grabbed the early lead with a 5-under 67. The 47th-ranked player fired six birdies and one lone bogey on the par-5 fourth. Trevor Cone of Virginia Tech and Hank Lebioda of Florida State tied for second at 4-under 68, followed by Robin Sciot-Siegrist of Louisville, Scott Vincent of Virginia Tech, Denny McCarthy of Virginia, Miller Capps of Clemson, and Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest all sit in fourth at 3-under 69. Four out of those five are ranked in the top 70 in the country. Clemson's Stephen Behr, Virginia's Ji Soo Park, North Carolina's Do, and Florida State's Josh Lee round out the top 10 at 2-under 70.
The ACC Championships will continue Saturday and Sunday at the Old North State Club in New London. The course features a par-72, 7,102-yard layout. North Carolina will tee off starting at 9:30 a.m. off the first hole. Live coverage will be available on ESPN3 throughout the weekend, as well as on Golfstat.com and GoHeels.com.
