Ben Griffin Selected To All-ACC Men's Golf Team
May 11, 2015 | Men's Golf
“I am so proud of Ben,” says Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. “On top of being named All-ACC, he earned a 4.0 GPA this spring semester. This may be one of the toughest years to make All-ACC in men's golf. Our conference is so strong and with a record breaking 10 teams moving on to the NCAAs, the competition for individual awards was incredible. It is a testament to Ben's consistency throughout the year, an honor well deserved.”
Griffin, a freshman from Chapel Hill, N.C., has captured two tournament wins this year, the Tar Heel Intercollegiate and the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate, both with a score of 10-under 206. He has carded eight top-10 finishes in Carolina's 11 tournaments this year and his other three were top-25 finishes. Most recently, Griffin tied for 20th at the ACC Championships.
Griffin leads the Tar Heels with a 70.75 scoring average. He has score 21 under-par rounds, 11 in the 60s, and one even par round.
Griffin is honored on the 12-man team with Florida State's Jack Maguire, Hank Lebioda and Rowin Caron; Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans and Anders Albertson; Louisville's Robin Sciot-Siegrist; Virginia's Derek Bard and Denny McCarthy; Virginia Tech's Trevor Cone and Scott Vincent; and Wake Forest's Will Zalatoris. Schniederjans of Georgia Tech was named the ACC Player of the Year while Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest was named the ACC Freshman of the Year and Trey Jones of Florida State was selected the ACC Coach of the Year.
Griffin and the 19th-ranked Tar Heels will host the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional this week, May 14-16, at UNC Finley Golf Course. First round play will begin Thursday morning with the Tar Heels teeing off the #1 tee at 8 a.m.
