Men's Golf Team To Host NCAA Regional

CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina men's golf team will host one of six NCAA Regional Championships this weekend, May 14-16, at the UNC Finley Golf Course, which boasts a par 72, 7,242-yard layout. The Tar Heels are the third seed in the tournament, along with 12 other top teams.
This NCAA Chapel Hill Regional is full of top ranks, as the top-ranked team and the top-ranked individual will both compete. No. 1 Florida State heads the field of 13 teams, along with the #1 individual in the country, Maverick McNealy of Stanford. Wake Forest and Clemson are the other two ACC teams in the field. Miami (Ohio) was crowned the Mid-American Conference Champion, Stanford the Pac-12 Champion, Georgia Regents the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Champion, and Loyola-Maryland the Patriot League Champion. Jack Maguire of Florida State is the 11th-ranked player in the country, along with fellow Seminole Hank Lebioda at #13. Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest is the 16th-ranked player in the country, followed by Rowin Caron of Florida State at #24. Freshman Ben Griffin of North Carolina is the 29th-ranked player in the country. In this regional, the teams have combined for over 20 wins this season.
Of the 13 teams in the field, eight are ranked in the top 50 according to Golfstat. Florida State comes in at #1, followed by #11 Stanford, #19 North Carolina, #24 Kennesaw State, #25 Wake Forest, #36 Clemson, #37 Florida, and #50 Charlotte. McNeese State ranks at #62, followed by Penn State at #63, #107 Miami (Ohio), #122 Loyola-Maryland, and Georgia Regents.
The Tar Heels are coming off a solid fifth-place finish at the ACC Championships at 10-under 854 where they competed against some of the top teams in the country. The Tar Heels struggled on the first day with a 5-over 293, but bounced back with two of the lowest team scores in the field on Saturday and Sunday at 6-under 282 and 9-under 279.
This year marks Carolina's 23rd trip to the NCAA Regionals. Since the regional format was instituted in 1989, Carolina has received a bid to the NCAA Regionals in all but four years (2009, 2011 2012, and 2014). The Tar Heels are one of 81 teams headed to the NCAA Regionals May 14-16. The other sites are The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Indiana, hosted by Ball State University; The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California, hosted by the University of San Diego; The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas, hosted by Texas Tech; Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington, hosted by the University of Washington; and The Course at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut, hosted by Yale University.
