Tar Heels Tied For Sixth At NCAA Regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina shot a 1-over-par 289 and is tied for sixth after day two of the 2015 NCAA Chapel Hill Men's Golf Regional at UNC Finley Golf Course. The Tar Heels had moved as high as third place in the middle of the round, but dropped three shots over the final three holes.
“I'm glad we're still in it, because we played poorly today,” says UNC head coach Andrew Sapp. “Hopefully, we'll break out of it and play well tomorrow. I feel good going into tomorrow because we haven't had our best round yet. I'm confident all the guys can draw from their past experiences on this course and come out and put up a good final round. Tomorrow is a new day and it's going to be a good one.”
Stanford fired a 13-under 275 to take the lead over Charlotte. The Cardinal was led by Maverick McNealy's 5-under 67. McNealy, the top ranked player in the country, is in second place overall at 7-under 137. McNealy started the day on the back side, posting a 31 with birdies on the 12th, 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th holes.
Charlotte dropped three strokes from Friday's first-round lead and is second at 566. Florida State is third (570), Florida and Kennesaw State are tied for fourth (573), UNC and Clemson are tied at sixth (575), Georgia Regents is eighth (578), McNeese State is ninth (580), Wake Forest is 10th (582), Penn State is 11th (590), Loyola (Md.) is 12th (593) and Miami (Ohio) is 13th (594).
Western Carolina's J.T. Poston, competing as an individual, leads the tournament at 8-under (136) after shooting back-to-back 68s.
The Tar Heels were led by freshman Ben Griffin, who posted a 2-under 70 despite a triple bogey on the 18th hole. Griffin was even through the first 11 holes, but birdied the 12th, eagled the par-5 13th, birdied the 14th and 17th before the triple at the 18th which put him tied for 32nd.
First round leader William Register shot a 4-over-par 76 for a two-day total of 142 and is in 11th place heading into Saturday's final round. Sophomore Henry Do shot a 71 and is tied for 22nd with a two-day total of 144. Sophomore Carter Jenkins posted a 73 for a total of 145 and is tied for 32nd. Senior Brandon Dalinka shot 75 for a total of 150 to put him tied for 60th.
The NCAA Chapel Hill Regional field, one of six being played across the country, includes 13 teams and 10 individuals, and is being played at the par 72, 7,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course. The top five teams and low individual outside those five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will be played May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
The NCAA Chapel Hill Regional concludes with the third and final round Saturday. Tee times begin Saturday at 7:30 a.m. The Tar Heels begin play at 7:30 a.m. off the No. 10 tee. There is no admission and the public is welcome.
