CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's golf team registered a 6-over-par 870 Saturday to conclude play in the 2015 NCAA Chapel Hill Men's Golf Regional at UNC Finley Golf Course. The Tar Heels finish in eighth place, with freshman William Register leading the team with a 2-under-par 214, good for a tie for 13th place.
“Obviously, I'm disappointed that we didn't play well this week,” UNC head coach Andrew Sapp said. “This is, I believe, only the third time we've shot over par in a tournament. Unfortunately, it came at the wrong time.”
Register, from Burlington, N.C., carded an even-par 72 in the final round, with birdies on holes #3 and #4 and two bogeys on holes #6 and #16. Register finished in a tie for 13th with a 2-under 214 after recording a 6-under 66 in the first round and a 4-over 76 in the second round. Sophomore Carter Jenkins, from Raleigh, N.C., concluded the tournament with an even-par 216 after registering a 1-under 71 with birdies on holes #1, #3 and #6. He finished 22nd overall, jumping 10 spots in Saturday's final round.
Henry Do, a sophomore from Canton, Mich., shot a 4-over 76 in the final round of play to land in a tie for 41st place with a 4-over 220. Do recorded birdies on holes #3, #8 and #17, as well as a bogey and three double bogeys on the final day, in conjunction with a 1-over 73 on the first day and a 1-under 71 on the second day. Senior Ben Griffin birdied the third and 11th holes but was hurt by six bogeys and one double bogey for a 6-over 78 on Saturday. Griffin, of Chapel Hill, finished tied for 55th overall. Rounding out the Tar Heel roster, Senior Brandon Dalinka carded a 4-over 76 in the final round with birdies on two, three and nine. A native of Newtown, Pa., Dalinka concluded the tournament in a tie for 63rd, with a 3-over 75 in the first two rounds.
Charlotte led the 13-team field in the final round of play with a 9-under 279 on the day to win the regional title with a 19-under 845. Stanford took second with a 14-under 850, and Florida State finished third with an 11-under 853. Fourth-place Florida (855) and fifth-place Clemson (859) also advance to the NCAA Championship, set for May 29-June 3 at The Concession Club in Bradenton, Fla.
“I've said all spring I've felt like we were trending in the right direction,” Charlotte coach Ryan Cabbage said. “We didn't play great every weekend, but I felt like we were getting closer and getting better. I think this just falls in line with that. Obviously to do this against this field is something that is very special. There are some very good teams here; there are some teams here who will be competing for a national championship. For our guys to do what they did just kind of solidifies what we have been competing for.”
The rest of the field was Kennesaw State in sixth (866), McNeese State seventh (867), North Carolina eighth (870), GRU Augusta ninth (871), Wake Forest 10th (874), Penn State 11th (879), Loyola (Md.) 12th (891) and Miami (Ohio) 13th (897).
Maverick McNealy of Stanford, the nation's top-ranked player, fired a 2-under 70 in the final round for a 9-under 207 total to capture individual medalist honors. Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb and J.T. Poston of Western Carolina tied for second place at 7-under 209. Three players were deadlocked in fourth place at 6-under 210 – Kennesaw State's Jimmy Beck and Charlotte's Thomas Rowland and Victor Wiggins. Clemson's Austin Langdale and Florida State's Jack Maguire tied for seventh place at 5-under 211.
Poston of Western Carolina won the individual spot to advance to the NCAA Championships after both players fired a 7-under 209 total to end the regulation 54 holes. Poston won a two-hole playoff over Armstrong of Lipscomb. Both players carded a par-4 on the first playoff hole and Poston won the second playoff hole with a bogey-5.
