UNC Men's Golf Announces 2015-16 Schedule
July 15, 2015 | Men's Golf
The University of North Carolina men's golf team will defend three regular-season tournaments it won a year ago, beginning with the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at UNC Finley Golf Course on October 3-4.
Carolina also won last year for the second season in a row at the Bridgestone at Grandover Resort in Greensboro and the Sea Best Invitational at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. The Tar Heels will be teeing it up at both events again this season.
“Our schedule continues to improve with a nice mix of events that we will be returning to as well as several new and exciting tournaments,” says Carolina head coach Andrew Sapp. “Our players will have an opportunity to play a fantastic schedule against the best teams and All-Americas from across the country.”
Carolina returns four of its five starters from a year ago, including juniors Henry Do (Canton, Mich.) and Carter Jenkins (Raleigh) and sophomores Ben Griffin (Chapel Hill) and William Register (Burlington).
UNC's 2015-16 golf season gets underway on September 11th at the Carpet Capital Intercollegiate, a perennially strong event at the Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.
“We start the fall at The Farm, which is like starting the season with a major tournament,” says Sapp. “It's the beginning of an incredibly competitive five-event schedule that includes the Tar Heel, a return trip to Primland in Virginia and the Bridgestone, where we've had a lot of success the last two seasons. We also added the Tavistock Collegiate at Isleworth in Florida, which has an outstanding field.”
The Tar Heels begin the spring portion of the schedule on February 1, 2016, at the Sea Bast in Ponte Vedra, Fla., an event UNC won by seven shots a year ago. Carolina returns to the Rio Mar Country Club for the Puerto Rico Classic later that month, before embarking on a trio of events that are new to the schedule this year.
“After Florida and Puerto Rico, the rest of the regular season includes tournaments we have played in past years, but not last season,” says Sapp. “The Hackler Intercollegiate at the Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach will be a great start to our spring break and we're looking forward to going to the Schenkel Invitational in Georgia which always has a strong field. We round out regular-season play with the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Kannapolis, which we've won in the past and is a course that many of our players are familiar with.”
The Atlantic Coast Conference championship is April 22-24 at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The ACC Championship will be played at the Old North State Club for the 15th consecutive year.
NCAA regional action begins on May 16th and the NCAA Championship tees off on May 27th at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
