Notre Dame (15-1, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) benefitted from a balanced scoring attack all game long. Arike Ogunbowale paced the Fighting Irish with 16 points off the bench.
Destinee Walker led North Carolina (12-6, 2-1) with 12 points in its first conference setback of the season. Jamie Cherry added 10 points, while Xylina McDaniel hauled in a season-high 12 rebounds tp go with 10 points for her sixth career double-double.
A decisive rebound advantage kept Carolina within arms reach of the third-ranked Irish early on, but a 9-0 run in the late stages of the first quarter gave Notre Dame a 23-15 lead.
UNC was up 9-7 after a pair of free throws from Hillary Summers, who had six points in the opening frame, however, a jumper from Ogunbowale capped the Irish spurt.
The home teams success continued into the second frame. Notre Dame's 11-2 run increased its advantage to 34-17, forcing Carolina to call a timeout. The Irish led 47-27 at the half.
The lead grew to as many as 36 points in the final minute. The loss snapped Carolina's season-best six-game winning streak.
