CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina junior place-kicker Nick Weiler has been named a semifinalist for the 2016 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, which is presented annually to the student-athlete that best displays character, teamwork, and citizenship, the attributes Athletes for a Better World deems central to transforming individuals, sport, and society.
A native of Fairfax Station, Va., Weiler has been a peer mentor in the Carolina Leadership Academy for two years and has participated in the Rising Stars Program. Weiler volunteers weekly at New Hope Elementary School in Chapel Hill as a mentor to the kids and as coordinator of the Pen Pals program. He has also been involved in Habitat for Humanity, Carolina Dreams, the Charles House and the UNC Children's Hospital.
The award, which is named in honor of former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, establishes the recipients as athletes of excellence both on and off the field, role models both as performers and persons, the most important and distinctive honor athletes can achieve.
The Wooden Cup is open to all college athletes, all divisions, all sports. For this reason, the Wooden Cup is regarded as the highest award in college sports.
Weiler recently completed an outstanding junior season that saw him set UNC records for most points in a single season (127) and most consecutive extra points (63) as the Tar Heels finished 11-3.
