Hitt's 71 Leads UNC After Day One at Tavistock

Freshman Austin Hitt shot a 1-under-par 71 and the University of North Carolina men's golf team shot a 1-over 289 and stands in seventh place after day one of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational Sunday at the Isleworth Golf and Country Club.
Hitt made a team-low three birdies, but bogeyed only two holes en route to his 71. The Longwood, Fla., native is tied for ninth place.
Senior Zach Martin, playing in the No. 1 position for the second straight tournament, led UNC with birdies, but had a triple bogey on the 10th hole and finished with an even-par 72.
Sophomore Joshua Martin was 5-over through 12 holes, but birdied four of the last six holes for a 1-over 73. Juniors Ben Griffin and William Register also carded 73s.
The Tar Heels are seventh, only six holes out of the lead. Florida and Purdue share the top spot after 18 holes with matching 5-under 283s. North Florida and Vanderbilt are three shots back at 286.
Carolina, ninth in the latest national Golfweek rankings, leads No. 1 Illinois by six shots and No. 6 Texas Tech by four strokes.
Texas Tech's Hannes Ronneblad shot 67 to lead the individual competition by one shot over Central Florida's Donnie Trosper and North Florida's Andrew Alligood. Hitt is one of 17 players under par.
“Our guys played solid today and all of them are in the hunt with 36 holes to play,” says UNC head coach Andrew Sapp. “No one did anything spectacular but I am pleased with our start to the tournament. The field is bunched with seven teams within six shots and we need to make sure we save every shot possible and take advantage of our birdie opportunities.”
The second round is Monday and the event concludes with a final round on Tuesday. This is Carolina's final team event of the fall.
