Tar Heels Announce 2017 Men's Lacrosse Schedule
December 19, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Nine home games, seven games against 2016 NCAA Tournament qualifiers and five games to be televised on ESPNU highlight the 2017 men's lacrosse schedule for the defending NCAA champion University of North Carolina Tar Heels.
Coming off a 12-6 season that saw an NCAA Tournament run in which the unseeded Tar Heels upset four seeded opponents to claim their first national crown since 1991, coach Joe Breschi has put together another rugged docket for the Carolina Blue & White, opening on February 4 against UMBC. UNC's first nine games are against non-conference opponents, including 2016 NCAA Tournament participants Johns Hopkins on Februrary 25, Denver on March 4 and 2016 NCAA runner-up Maryland on March 25.
The game against the Terrapins, who the Tar Heels defeated 14-13 in overtime in last May's NCAA championship game, is the first of five straight games to be played on ESPNU, followed by ACC contests against Duke, Virginia, Syracuse and Notre Dame. The games against the Blue Devils and Cavaliers will be Sunday night games. The Syracuse game (April 15) will be played in Kenan Stadium as part of Alumni Weekend. The game against Duke will be the final regular season home game ever played at Fetzer Field (April 2). The current stadium, originally built in 1935 and the home of UNC lacrosse since 1949, will be razed following the conclusion of the 2017 season with a new Fetzer Field to be built on the same spot opening with soccer season in 2018. Tar Heel lacrosse will play there for the first time in 2019.
