Heels Move To 3-0 With Win Over Aztecs

CHAPEL HILL – Marie McCool scored a career-high five goals and Molly Hendrick had four goals as North Carolina (3-0) beat San Diego State, 20-7, in women's lacrosse on Sunday afternoon at a cold Fetzer Field.
The Tar Heels tied a school record by attempting 52 shots, out-shooting the Aztecs (0-2) by a 52-14 margin. Carolina also took 52 shots on March 16, 1997, vs. Lehigh. Carolina had 31 ground balls to SDSU's 15 and won 23 of the game's 30 draws.
Hendrick scored four goals for the third game in a row in her return from ACL surgery that forced her to miss the second half of last season. McCool got her five goals on eight shots while also collecting four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
A balanced Carolina attack also included two goals and three assists from freshman Olivia Ferrucci and two goals, two assists and seven draw controls from Sammy Jo Tracy. Aly Messinger tallied two goals and one assist, Ela Hazar had a goal and two assists and Sydney Holman had a goal and an assist. Freshman Gianna Bowe scored twice off the bench, and Carly Reed scored as well.
The Aztecs got two goals and an assist from Kristen Hickey.
“It was a good team effort today,” said Tar Heel head coach Jenny Levy after the game. “I thought we did a great job, it was great to get everybody on the field playing. The focuses of the week were draw controls, ground balls and playing well together in clearing the ball. I thought all of that got better throughout this weekend, so we're happy with what we accomplished.”
Carolina led, 7-0, after the first 10:21 of the game and took a 14-1 lead into the break at halftime. The Aztecs scored five of the game's final seven goals to make the final score closer after UNC led by as many as 16 goals two occasions late in the game.
Caylee Waters started in goal for Carolina and played the first half, allowing one goal and making two saves. Megan Ward played the second half and allowed six goals while making three saves.
Carolina will return to action next Saturday at 11 a.m. against Florida.
