Tar Heels Finish 5th in Puerto Rico Classic
February 23, 2016 | Men's Golf
The University of North Carolina men's golf team shot a 2-over-par 290 in Tuesday's third and final round to finish fifth in the Puerto Rico Classic played at the Wyndham Rio Mar Resort and Rio Mar Country Club's River Course.
Tar Heel sophomore William Register finished in a tie for fourth after shooting an ever-par 72. The Burlington, N.C., native closed at 6-under 210, five strokes behind individual medalist Robby Shelton of Alabama, who won with an 11-under 205.
Alabama also won the team title after posting a final round 276. The Tide had a three-day total of 839, nine shots ahead of Clemson. Georgia was third, Kentucky fourth and UNC fifth.
Junior Carter Jenkins shot Carolina's best round today with a 71 and finished tied for 19th at 2-under 214. Ben Griffin and Henry Do tied for 27th (216) and Joshua Martin tied for 61st (228).
Carolina junior Zach Martin tied for sixth (213) in an individual event at the Rio Mar Resort's Ocean Course. Martin had a final round 73.
"We put ourselves in position to contend for the title after a great first round and solid round two, but we couldn't get any momentum going today,” says UNC head coach Andrew Sapp. “We missed a lot of birdie opportunities and couldn't get any of those rounds in the 60s we needed. With a couple of weeks off in preparation for our spring break tournaments I feel confident we can straighten some things out and fight to win those events."
The Tar Heels return to action on March 12-13 at the Jim Hackler Intercollegiate at the Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
