CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic has been promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Keith Heckendorf has added the title of passing game coordinator. The moves were announced Wednesday by head coach Larry Fedora at his National Signing Day press conference.
"Kap has been with our program since we got here and was with me at Southern Miss," said Fedora. "As I was evaluating what we would do on the offensive side of the ball, I decided Kap would be the best person to run the offensive meeting room and put together a gameplan. He's an exceptional coach and recruiter, and a great person."
Kapilovic is Fedora's longest tenured assistant coach and the only remaining assistant who came with him from Southern Miss in 2012. He has been with Fedora since 2008, coaching four seasons at Southern Miss and the last four at UNC. Kapilovic was promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2014 and was named associate head coach in 2015.
In his four seasons on the staff, Carolina has set several offensive school records, including points per game, total offense, passing yards and first downs. In 2015, Carolina went 11-1 in the regular season, advanced to the ACC Championship Game and set more than 60 team and individual school records.
At UNC, he has coached some of the best offensive linemen in the country. Last season, he tutored offensive guard Landon Turner, who was named a first-team All-America by the Associated Press. He has coached several NFL players at UNC, including offensive guard Jonathan Cooper (No. 7 overall pick in the NFL Draft), tackle James Hurst, center Russell Bodine, guard Travis Bond and tackle Brennan Williams.
