ELON, N.C—Sammy Jo Tracy, Molly Hendrick and Sydney Holman had big games as the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team won its second consecutive road game, 13-2, at Elon on Tuesday night.
Tracy had three goals, one assist and four draw controls. Hendrick had three goals, three draws and two ground balls. Holman pitched in three assists and two ground balls in a balanced attack that assisted on each of its first six goals.
Aly Messinger had two goals and an assist, while Carly Reed and Gianna Bowe both scored twice (with Bowe tossing in five draws). Olivia Ferrucci added a goal, and Marie McCool, Charlotte Sofield and Ela Hazar had assists.
"We are happy with the team effort tonight, however, our execution could have been cleaner," said head coach Jenny Levy. "We are constantly trying to improve and each game presents a different challenge for us to work through. We did some really nice things on the field, displays of shear brilliance, but I also think there are areas that we need to improve on. We will continue to work hard so our individual and team execution will improve."
Carolina (6-2) jumped ahead quickly, building a 6-0 lead in the first 20+ minutes of the game. Hendrick, Messinger and Tracy each scored two goals in the initial scoring burst, and each goal was assisted. Holman had assists on three of the initial six goals.
Elon got on the board with 1:46 left in the first half, but Hendrick and Tracy posted back-to-back unassisted goals with 35 and 27 seconds left as Carolina led at the break, 8-1.
The Tar Heels continued to pour it on after halftime, building a 11-goal lead at 12-1 with under seven minutes remaining. Elon scored with 3:23 to play, then Reed took a pass from Hazar and scored for the final Tar Heel score with 1:53 left.
Caylee Waters started and played in goal for the Tar Heels and made six saves, improving to 6-1 this season.
Carolina won 13 of 17 draws in the game, led by Tracy with four and Bowe with five. UNC out-shot the Phoenix, 27-17.
