Griffin Leads UNC With First Round 68

University of North Carolina sophomore Ben Griffin fired a season-best 4-under 68 to lead the Tar Heels to a 9-under par 279 and fourth place after round one at the Schenkel Invitational at the Forest Heights Country Club.
Griffin was one of three Tar Heels to shoot under par. Junior Carter Jenkins is 3 under (69) and junior Henry Do is 2 under (70). Sophomore William Register is at even par and freshman Joshua Martin shot 75.
The Tar Heels stand nine shots back of Wake Forest, which had scores of 64, 68, 69, 69 and 70 to finish 18-under 270.
Vanderbilt and Georgia State are tied for second at 274. Iowa is tied for fourth with the Tar Heels at 279.
Wake Forest's Davis Womble shot 8-under 64 to lead a quartet at 66. Griffin is tied for eighth, Jenkins is tied for 21st and Do is tied for 27th.
Griffin had five birdies and only one bogey. He birdied the 18th hole to post his low round of the year by a stroke. Jenkins also had five birdies.
Second round action begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. The Tar Heels tee off at 9:45 a.m. and are paired with Iowa and Georgia Southern.
