March 7, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Johnson also was a unanimous selection on the media's All-ACC first team that was announced on Sunday. Johnson and Virginia's Malcolm Brogdon were the coaches' only unanimous selections. They were also unanimous selections to the media team.
Johnson leads the ACC in rebounding (10.8), field goal percentage (.606) and double-doubles (19) and is sixth in scoring (16.8). He is a finalist for several national player of the year awards. Earlier today, Johnson was selected by USA Today to its All-America first-team.
The ACC coaches also voted the Orangeburg, S.C., native to the league's all-defensive team, the first time in his career Johnson has earned that distinction. He is joined on the defensive team by Virginia's Malcolm Brogdon (the coaches' Player and Defensive Player of the Year), Miami's Tonye Jekiri, Syracuse's Michael Gbinije, Clemson's Landry Nnoko and Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku.
Johnson leads the ACC in defensive rebounds (7.7 per game), leads UNC in blocked shots with 37 and is second in steals with 36, and anchors a Tar Heel defense that is third in the conference in field goal percentage defense. UNC's opponents are shooting 41.3 percent from the field for the season. The Tar Heels have held each of their last 20 opponents to under 45 percent shooting from the floor.
The head coaches selected UNC junior forward Isaiah Hicks as the ACC's Sixth Man of the Year, an honor the media bestowed upon him as well. The Oxford, N.C., native is averaging 9.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and shooting 60.6 percent from the floor.
Johnson and Hicks led the Tar Heels to a 14-4 record en route to the 2016 ACC regular-season champions
