RALEIGH, N.C. – Former University of North Carolina All-America, NBA veteran and All-Star Antawn Jamison has partnered with nonprofit Camp Corral to support military children across the nation.
Jamison will serve as an official spokesperson for Camp Corral, an organization that provides free summer camp experiences for children of wounded, disabled or fallen military service members. A new public service announcement will feature Jamison encouraging viewers to make a donation to help send more military children to Camp Corral's free week of summer camp. Additionally, Jamison is offering several Camp Corral campers the opportunity to attend his 2016 All-Star basketball clinic at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in July, free of charge.
“Supporting military kids is important to me because they face challenges many of us don't have to go through. One of my biggest charitable goals is to give kids opportunities that allow them to have fun and be kids, so a partnership with Camp Corral was natural,” said Jamison. “I look forward to helping Camp Corral reach more military families and provide children with an unforgettable week at summer camp.”
Jamison's partnership with Camp Corral is another effort of his “A Better Tomorrow” charitable initiative, which has benefited countless citizens and communities nationwide through scholarship awards, food drives and financial contributions since 2002. Throughout his sixteen-year NBA career Jamison also hosted “Antawn's Army,” a program that provided free NBA tickets to underprivileged youth, many of whom were from military families. In addition, Jamison's annual All-Star Basketball Camp allows up-and-coming youth athletes to receive professional coaching at a discounted rate or for no cost.
“We are honored to partner with Antawn in our effort to serve military kids,” said Mary Beth Hernandez, chief executive officer of Camp Corral. “Antawn is a selfless individual who has demonstrated through his commitments and contributions that he really wants to make a difference in the lives of children. Camp Corral is very grateful for his support and the tremendous impact it will have on the military community.”
Camp Corral was founded in 2011 as a one-camp pilot program and has rapidly expanded to 21 partner camps in 19 states. The organization partners with accredited YMCA and 4-H camps that offer military kids traditional camp experiences through activities such as horseback riding, canoeing and rock climbing. Camp Corral has served over 10,000 military children, the majority of whom have a parent who is wounded, disabled or fallen.
