Blueberry Patch Ready For Picking
July 21, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Open to the public, the patch came about around the year 2000 when Hatchell discovered she had ovarian tumors, which were benign. She purchased over 200 acres in eastern Buncombe County around that time and later decided it would be a fantastic way to raise money for the hospital.
All money raised from the blueberry patch goes to two new exercise rooms at Lineberger.
Want to pick blueberries?
Sylvia Hatchell expects the current crop to be plentiful. Here are directions to her property: Take Interstate 40 west to the Black Mountain exit. Turn right off the exit and follow N.C. 9 South 5 miles toward Lake Lure. Turn right at Chestnut Hill Road, go 2 miles and turn left on Flat Creek Road. The blueberry patch is about a half-mile down the road on the right at 143 Flat Creek Road; there is a small sign near the road and patch. Donations can be made to Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill.
