Tar Heels Tee Off At Rod Myers Invitational
September 8, 2016 | Men's Golf
The University of North Carolina men's golf team begins play this season at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted this weekend at the Duke University Golf Course. Play is scheduled for 36 holes on Saturday, September 10th, and 18 holes on Sunday, September 11th.
The Tar Heels return eight players from a year ago and added two new members, freshman Austin Hitt of Longwood, Fla., and Jose Montaño, a junior who played two seasons at Xavier where he was a two-time All-Big East Conference selection and played in two NCAA Regionals.
Juniors William Register (Burlington, N.C.) and Ben Griffin (Chapel Hill, N.C.) are first and third, respectively, in career stroke average in UNC history. Both players won a pair of events as freshman. Griffin earned All-ACC and honorable mention All-America honors two years ago; Register was an all-region pick in 2016.
UNC has three seniors on the roster – Henry Do of Canton, Mich., Zach Martin of Pinehurst, N.C.; and Davis Bateman of Charlotte, N.C.
Carolina's lineup for the Rod Myers Invitational based on a series of preseason qualifying rounds includes two juniors, two sophomores and a freshman:
#1 – Joshua Martin, sophomore, Pinehurst, N.C.
#2 – Austin Hitt, freshman, Longwood, Fla.
#3 – William Register, junior, Burlington, N.C.
#4 – Ben Griffin, junior, Chapel Hill, N.C.
#5 – Preyer Fountain, sophomore, Raleigh, N.C.
“Starting off at the Rod Myers Intercollegiate is an awesome opportunity for our players,” says head coach Andrew Sapp. “Getting to play seven players helps not only our starters, but gets experience for other players on our deep roster that will pay off the rest of the fall. We are definitely playing in some familiar territory, and look forward to the strong competition in Durham. We have a busy fall season and playing so close to home should help us to get off to a great start. Coach Rod Myers was a good friend of mine who was always so kind to me when I was a young coach, and I love bringing the Tar Heels to the event that honors his memory.”
Do and Montaño will also compete as individuals in the first event of the season. Following play at Duke, the Tar Heels compete next at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill., on September 16-18.
