The University of North Carolina shot an opening round 8-over-par 296 and is tied for 11^th place after day one of the 2017 Puerto Rico Classic Sunday at the Rio Mar River Course.

Georgia is 7-under and leads NC State by two strokes. Clemson (-4) and Kentucky (-2) are also under par after 18 holes in the 54-hole event.

Freshman Austin Hitt shot an ever-par 72 to lead the Tar Heels. Hitt is tied for 21^st. Preyer Fountain and Ben Griffin shot 74, Jose Montaño shot 76 and William Register opened with an 80.

NC State's Stephen Franken shot 5-under 67 for the best round of the day.

The tournament, hosted by Purdue, continues with the second round on Monday.
