COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – North Carolina sophomore Nicole Greene finished fifth and earned first-team All-America honors after clearing a height of 6- ½ (1.84 meters) at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday evening.
A native of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Greene cleared her first height of 5-9 ½ (1.76 meters) on her first attempt. Struggling on the second height of 5- 11 ¼ (1.81 meters), Greene was able to continue to the next round, clearing the height on her third attempt. Greene cleared her last height of 6- ½ (1.84 meters) on her first try, claiming her fifth place finish.
"I'm really excited for Nicole and her finish at the NCAA Championships," said head coach Harlis Meaders. "Last year, she was one of only two freshmen in the country to actually qualify for the meet. And to come back this year as a true sophomore and finish in fifth place, that's an amazing job.
"Nicole is coached by Coach Hudson who is also a former All-American for us here at the University of North Carolina, and those two have created a really powerful duo. They communicate well together. Coach Hudson has done a fantastic job of preparing her for this level of competition, and to see her come out today on the championship day and preform like a true champion was absolutely amazing. Nicole has been a fantastic team leader for us. She's academic All-American. She's really been the true example of what a student athlete should be at the University of North Carolina."
It was Greene's second consecutive year at the NCAA Indoor Championships. A year ago, she earned Second-Team All-America honors with a 12th place finish at 5-9 ¼ (1.76 meters).
