Bryan, Texas – Due to inclement weather, The Aggie Invitational has cancelled the final round of play and will be scored as a 36-hole event. The Tar Heels finished tied for fifth place after rounds of 298 and 283.
“We would have loved to play the final round today,” said head coach Andrew Sapp. “Yesterday afternoon we built some nice momentum and we were looking forward to a chance to continue moving up the leaderboard. Unfortunately, the storms canceled the final round. It was great to see Ben (Griffin) and William (Register) shoot under par in round two and lead the team to a strong second round score. This event had an NCAA feel to it so it was great to see our guys respond by beating three top 25 teams and compete hard. This was great preparation toward the post season ahead.”
William Register had the best Saturday for Carolina as his rounds of 73 and 70 left him in 14th at 2-under par. Ben Griffin shot 78 and a season-low 68 to finish tied for 19th at 2-over par. Griffin was tied by Henry Do who had rounds of 74 and 72. Jose Montaño was tied for 31st at 5-over par (76-73) and Austin Hitt tied for 60th at 13-over par (75-82).
Golfstat's number nine LSU took home the team trophy at 11-under par and were trailed by number 4 Baylor by one shot. Overall, nine of Golfstat's top 30 teams competed.
Kyle Mueller of Michigan won the individual competition by one stroke at 6-under par.
The tournament was played at the Traditions Golf Club, a par-72 7,146-yard test.
Next up for Carolina is the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Intercollegiate next weekend in Kannapolis, N.C. Last year Carolina finished in third place at the tournament.
