No. 4 Tar Heels Sweep Boston College
April 9, 2017 | Baseball
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. --- No. 4 North Carolina established a new school record for runs in a three-game ACC series in sweeping a doubleheader from Boston College 16-4 and 15-3 Sunday at Commander Shea Field. The Tar Heels scored 48 runs over three games against the Eagles, surpassing the 45 posted by the 2002 squad in a sweep at Duke. It also marked the first time a Carolina team reached double figures three times in an ACC series since a 2002 sweep over NC State.
The Tar Heels (26-6, 12-3 ACC) pounded out a season-high 20 hits in a 16-4 win over Boston College in the first game of the day. Kyle Datres, who hit .636 for the weekend, had a home run among his three hits and drove in four runs in support of Gianluca Dalatri. Dalatri (3-2) picked up his first career ACC victory with six innings of three-hit ball, allowing just one run and striking out five.
All nine starters had a hit in the victory, with six of the nine picking up multiple safeties. Datres, Brian Miller and Logan Warmoth each had three hits, and the Tar Heels saw five of their 20 hits go for extra bases. In addition to Datres' blast, Zack Gahagan homered for the second straight day in the third.
Carolina kept the offense rolling in the series finale, rushing out to a 13-1 lead after four innings. Warmoth hit his team-leading seventh home run of the year in the win, which was UNC's eighth in a row.
Austin Bergner made his first career start in the victory. The freshman from Windermere, Florida, went five innings and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out four. Brett Daniels and Jason Morgan finished out the game, which was called after eight innings due to darkness.
Cody Roberts was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and four runs scored to lead another overwhelming offensive effort. Roberts, Warmoth, Miller, Datres and Brandon Riley all had multiple hits, while six Tar Heels drove in multiple runs.
Mitch Bigras had three hits in the finale for Boston College, which dropped to 9-20 and 1-14 in league play.
Carolina is back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Tar Heels take on South Carolina at Charlotte's BB&T Ballpark.
