The North Carolina men's golf team begins postseason play on Monday morning in the NCAA Stanford Regional. The site is one of six that will host teams over the next three days to determine qualifiers to the NCAA Championships in Sugar Grove, Ill.
In last year's Marana Regional, the Tar Heels finished 13th. This is the fourth time in six seasons that the Tar Heels have qualified for regional play under head coach Andrew Sapp.
Ben Griffin, William Register, and Austin Hitt will each continue their streak of having started every tournament for Carolina. Jose Montaño has now started every tournament of the spring while Zach Martin is starting for the first time since the Sea Best Invitational on in February.
Griffin is coming off a tie for second place at the ACC Championships where he birdied three of his last nine holes to force his way into a playoff. Griffin has the team's leading stroke average, 72.65, for the season.
This is the third straight year competing for UNC in the NCAA Regionals for both Griffin and Register. Montaño competed as an individual for Xavier the last two years and finished tied for seventh and tied for 22nd respectively. This will be the first NCAA Regional for the senior Martin and freshman Hitt.
The top five teams and top individual from a non-qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
The Tar Heels will begin their first round tomorrow morning at 11:50 a.m. EDT. Carolina will play alongside Pepperdine and Georgia Tech. Teams will be reseeded for tee times each day in accordance with their positions on the leaderboard.
