Tar Heels Tied for 9th After NCAA Regional First Round

Senior Zach Martin and junior William Register led the University of North Carolina with 1-over-par 71s on Monday in round one of the NCAA Stanford Men's Golf Regional.
Carolina is tied for ninth place after an 8-over 288, eight strokes behind fifth-place Oklahoma. The top five teams after three rounds advance to the NCAA Championship.
Junior Ben Griffin double-bogeyed his final hole of the round and finished at 2-over 72. Junior Jose Montaño shot 74 and freshman Austin Hitt finished with a 75.
Stanford leads the regional at 9-under. Baylor is second at -3, BYU is third at -2, North Florida is fourth at -1 and the Sooners are fifth at even par.
Pepperdine and Houston are tied for sixth place at 1 over, Georgia Tech is eighth at +7 and the Tar Heels and Ohio State are ninth at +8.
Stanford's Maverick McNealy and Oklahoma's Brad Dalke shot the best rounds of the day at 5-under 65.
Martin and Register are tied for 27th.
Round two is scheduled for Tuesday at the Stanford Golf Course (par 70).
