Eight UNC Athletics Programs Honored for Top APRs

The NCAA is honoring eight athletic programs at the University of North Carolina for placing among the top 10 percent nationally in Academic Progress Rates in their respective sports.
The eight Tar Heel squads honored this year include men's cross country, women's fencing, women's golf, gymnastics, men's soccer, men's tennis, women's tennis and volleyball.
Carolina ranked first among public institutions in the ACC and fourth overall among ACC schools with its eight teams receiving the award for ranking in the top 10 percent in their respective sports.
Notre Dame (14), Duke (12), Boston College (12) and UNC (8) were the four schools in the ACC with the most teams in the top 10 percent. They were followed by Clemson, Louisville and Virginia with six apiece; Georgia Tech and Pitt with four; Florida State, Miami, NC State and Wake Forest with three; and Syracuse and Virginia Tech with two.
The NCAA also recognized Carolina's women's fencing and women's golf teams as two of 93 programs nationwide that have earned Public Recognition Awards in each of the last 12 years.
Volleyball ranks in the top 10 percent for the 11th straight year and gymnastics earned its eighth consecutive top-10 finish.
The APR is measures a team's academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation. This year's award is based on multi-year rates from data including 2012-13 to 2015-16.
Carolina men's cross country, women's fencing, women's golf, gymnastics, men's tennis, women's tennis and volleyball each earned a perfect four-year scored 1000. Men's soccer has scored 1000 in each of the last three years and scored 997 for the four-year period.
