Tar Heels Headed to Stanford Regional

The University of North Carolina men's golf team is the No. 6 seed in the Stanford Regional of the 2017 NCAA Championship.
The Stanford Regional will be played at the Stanford Golf Course on May 15-17.
Carolina is one of eight Atlantic Coast Conference teams selected to the play in the six NCAA regionals. The top five teams in the six regional advance to the NCAA Championship, which begins with 54 holes of stroke play on May 26 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Stanford is the No. 1 seed in the Stanford Regional. The Cardinal and the Tar Heels will compete for the top five spots with (in seed order) Baylor, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Pepperdine, North Florida, BYU, Houston, Ohio State, UC Santa Barbara, Sacramento State and South Dakota State.
“We are thrilled to head out to Stanford for the NCAA Regional,” says UNC head coach Andrew Sapp. “It's a strong field headed by the host school which is the Number 1 seed. You never know where you might be sent, so we try to play all over the country during the regular season. Our guys love playing in California and we played well in San Diego earlier this spring. It will be a great test, but our guys are up for the challenge.”
The Tar Heels are coming off a tie for seventh place at the ACC Championship. Junior Ben Griffin finished tied for second in a playoff for medalist honors at the ACC Championship. Griffin leads UNC with a 72.65 stroke average this year. Junior William Register is second in average at 73.30; his career average of 72.28 is second in UNC history with Griffin tied for third at 72.49.
Carolina has nine top-five finishes in 11 events this year with a season-best second place at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in October and the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic in March.
