UNC Clashes With Pitt On Sunday

CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina hosts its ACC home opener versus Pitt on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both teams have started 0-2 in conference play so plenty is on the line when these two recent league rivals clash inside Carmichael Arena.

Pitt leads 5-2 over the Tar Heels in the all-time series. Carolina snapped a four-game losing streak in the 2017 ACC Tournament first round in Conway, South Carolina. Jamie Cherry scored a career-high 31 points in the 72-60 victory over the Panthers.Â

Sylvia Hatchell won her 1,000th career game with a 79-63 victory over Grambling State on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Hatchell, a 2013 Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame inductee, is only the third women's basketball coach in history to reach 1,000 career victories, joining former Tennessee legend Pat Summitt and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski is the only men's coach among Division I basketball coaches to hit the 1,000 mark. Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma got his 1,000th victory later that night with a win over Oklahoma.

• Paris Kea, who ranks 2nd in the ACC in scoring with 20.3 points per game, scored a career-high 33 points against Washington on Dec. 17.Â
• Janelle Bailey has been named ACC Rookie of the Week on four occasions, including this week after averaging 18.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in 2 games last week.Â
• Carolina has the top scoring trio of players in the ACC. All three rank among the top-11. Paris Kea is 2nd (20.3), Jaime Cherry is 10th (15.7) and Janelle Bailey is 11th (15.3).
• UNC is shooting 47.7 percent as a team this season, a significant increase from last season's club that averaged 41.4% from the field.Â
• Carolina leads the ACC with an average of 17.7 assists per game.

• UNC's roster is made up of the eighth most freshmen and sophomores by percentage in the country. The underclassmen account for 10 of the 14 players on the 2017-18 roster.
